Trekking off the beaten path through remote Nepal's region of Humla and a kora around one of the world's most sacred mountains, mount Kailash in western Tibet, offers a first hand experience of Tibetan cultural and religious heritage.

Humla - Wild West of Nepal

The Humla region of Nepal lies in a far west of the country and is so remote, that it has been out of reach for most visitors until very recently. Today it is one of the ultimate trekking dreams for hikers and those who wish to discover the unique natural and cultural landscape of Tibetan Buddhists. The first six days of the trek will take us through remote Humla villages as we head to the Tibet boarder following the Karnali River, one of the main tributaries of the magnificent Ganges that feeds a large part of the Indian subcontinent.

Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar

After we reach Tibet, we will travel to sacred Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash, which have long been important pilgrimage sites for many religions such as Buddhist, Hindus, Bonpos and Jains. We will explore the temples and hermitages where for centuries meditators and pilgrims have been engaged in deep spiritual practices. We will do a three day sacred circumambulation – a kora around Mount Kailash, the centre of the world, as believed in many religions and the abode of hindu God Shiva.

This quest is led by experts in outdoor education, cultural heritage and religious studies, with years of experience in outdoor leadership, the study of comparative religions of South Asia, as well as working in the remote areas of Himalayan countries, such as Nepal and Tibet.

This is a trek for those with a real sense of adventure, who are happy to embrace basic living conditions in order to experience remote, rural mountain people’s life in Nepal and Tibet.

This trek can be qualified as moderate, with occasional strenuous days and thus a reasonable level of fitness is required. Accommodation on this trek is basic and on a shared basis, with little opportunity to wash either yourselves or your clothes unless, you wish to brave the cold communal village tap or the rivers we will be passing.

This trek emphasises:

  •  Responsible tourism
  •  Respect for the local population, their living habits, customs and religion
  •  Use of the local community for lodging, hiring staff and local products for eating
  •  Protecting the natural and human habitat
  •  Learning about the religious heritage of the areas we visit
